Gifted healer' publishes book, shrugs off new age
witch tag
Jun 2, 2005
John Slykhuis, Staff Writer
Susan Shienfield wanted to do something much more than
write a self-help book.
The Sutton author drew upon experiences from her 21-year
personal journey to create The Art of Chakra Balancing,
a guide to manage stress and anxiety.
The program, contained in a book-sized package, uses an
instructional booklet, guided meditation CD and a quartz
crystal, as well as a set of chakra cards to help
relationships, career, body image, finances, health and
the purpose of the soul.
Although leading a "regular suburban lifestyle", Mrs.
Shienfield said she is "a gifted healer who has the
ability to communicate with the cells of any individual
using many holistic techniques".
She smiled as she remembered those who saw her as a sort
of new age witch, saying recent scientific findings now
back up her theories.
"There were a lot of skeptics, but science has caught
up," she said, citing two recent studies, The Biology of
Belief by Dr. Bruce Lipton and Molecules of Emotion, by
Dr. Candace B. Pert.
Both affirm the power of the mind can, in fact,
influence living cells.
Mrs. Shienfield said she has witnessed hundreds of
clients benefit from techniques used in her private
practice. Trained in applied kinesiology, educational
kinesiology, crystal therapy and applied physiology,
Mrs. Shienfield draws on her studies of eastern
mysticism, North American aboriginal healing, Kabbalah
and Zen.
It started when her son was diagnosed with attention
deficit disorder and was prescribed Ritalin. When the
doctor described the potential side effects, she balked.
"None of it made any sense to me," she said. "I decided
to see if there was anything else out there."
That led her to a naturopath and then an energy healer
who did a "balance" on her son.
"It was like an exorcism. Something was coming of him,"
she said.
He is now a healthy and successful adult, she said.
Seeing the success of the "karmic healing", Mrs.
Shienfield decided to pursue that area of learning to
help others. One result of that spiritual journey is The
Art of Chakra Balancing. A sanskrit term, chakras are
seven energy centres in the body that when balanced,
lead to personal health and harmony.
She said root causes of negative stress are the result
of unresolved issues from one's past that the conscious
mind believes have been dealt with, but still reside in
body cells and need to be released. Through the guidance
in her kit, negative energy is drawn out of the body,
she said.
Mrs. Shienfield was in New York this week for the Book
Expo America exhibition and will be doing a book signing
at Chapters in Newmarket on Friday, June 17 at 7 p.m. As
well as Chapters stores and amazon.com, the kit is also
available at The Health Hut in Jackson's Point and The
Sutton Health and Bulk Food Store in Sutton.
The Art of Chakra Balancing is published by Andrews
McMeel Publishing in Kansas City and costs $24.95. For
