Revealing True Happiness

A perspective on what is true happiness, from a spiritualist point of view.

What would happen if at the count of three, everyone in the world’s definition of happiness were the same? Simple, there would be no world poverty, no shortages of all the necessities of life, food, medicine, clothing, education, and even no shortage of laughter.

What a bold statement considering most of us have bought into the myth of happiness. Something my generation, the Baby Boomers, strived for: bigger, better, more. Yes, we were expected to give to charity, a check which we wrote off our taxes, to some cause that, as we mailed it out, we secretly said, "Please God, I’ve given, now pass over my house any tragedies or pain that is to be inflicted."

Now, about the universal definition of what happiness is. We need the necessities of life to exist. More than that, we need to feel we lived, we mattered, we found true happiness, serving our soul’s purpose. Each person’s need to feel spiritually fulfilled is the same; however, how they serve that need is as individual as each person is unique.

There is a voice telling each person not only what their spiritual mission is, and how they can let it out. It generally goes unheard and is drowned out by a different voice. That voice tells us that happiness is about having things.

Ask a dying man what he regrets most and I guarantee he will say, "The overtime I spent at the office, instead of with my family." Being tuned in to the wrong voice is like a blind person without Braille, shut out from all the wonderful messages in books.

The truth is, most people will ask the question, “Is that all there is?” if they have not been true to their spirit. However, this happens in their later years, and time, at that end, runs out sooner rather than later. If they had been taught the message of true happiness from birth, how different the journey could have been.

Just looking at the state of the world is so overwhelming, it’s hard to believe that you can make a difference. However, you don’t have to be Mother Teresa, or write large checks to fulfill your spirit’s purpose.

Yes, you can make a difference. We all have responsibilities we have to take care of, and they require payment. However, payment is energy and it can come in many forms. No spirit really wants a handout. Even those living on the street have souls, and want to reach their spiritual potential. They too have the need to exist, and they too need an outlet to reach their highest purpose.

Join a volunteer group, or start a "happiness group" in your own neighborhood.

Start the group by offering a gift/skill. And indicate what you need. Create a register of participants. Each entering their own offerings and needs.

If this idea sounds familiar, it’s called bartering. Its not a new idea. However, our youth have lost the skill of sharing. I believe the loss of sharing begins in childhood when youth are indoctrinated into the "happiness myth".

Now, the next time a baby is born, a universal definition of true happiness should hang in a frame, in its nursery.
Happiness is _____________________.

Please write or email your definition, and we’ll publish them.
